Province News Letter: Paschim Tarang

The Apostolic Carmel is a Congregation of Sisters aggregated to the Order of Discalced Carmelites ( OCD )..It was founded in 1868 at Bayonne, France, by Mother Mary Veronica of the Passion, and established in Mangalore, India, in 1870, by Bishop Marie Ephrem OCD who had envisioned the birth of a “Carmel for the Missions” in India, devoted to education and other apostolic ministries.

In the course of time the little Congregation grew in numbers and in stability as a teaching Institute of active Carmelites. In 1971 pro-provinces were constituted and Mother Carmelita was chosen as the first Pro-Provincial. The year 1974 was a year of historical importance for the congregation, for the first month of the new year brought the happy news of the Decree of sanction for the Erection of Provinces. The erection of the provinces was a very significant milestone in the growth of the Apostolic Carmel. Five Provinces were erected – Karnataka, Northern, Southern, Western and the Sri Lanka Province. The Northern Province was spread to 8 states and 18 dioceses and for effective administration, it was again bifurcated into the Northern and Eastern Provinces in 1990.

The Western Province consists of the following geographical areas:
Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Delhi, Chandigarh and Jammu

The Province Headquarters are on the premises of Carmel Convent Bandra, Mumbai but, it is housed in a side wing, a building of its own and having its own identity and the house of formation is in Pune. The Western Province has 213 sisters in 24 houses.

Sister Mariella was the first Provincial Superior, the Current Provincial Superior is Sister Maria Christi A.C. She was elected as the Provincial Superior in December 2020 and re-elected in February 2024.
